"I have a deeply personal connection to the Bogong moth. When I was heavily pregnant with my son, I was hanging out the washing and looked up to see a beautiful, large Bogong moth on the line. I had never seen one before. I took the washing upstairs, and the moth flew around me, eventually landing on the window. It felt like it was protecting me, taking care of me and my baby. To honour this care, I named my son Bidi-Bidi, meaning moth in my language."
First Nations Representative.

For millennia, the Ngambari people have convened in the highlands near Canberra each summer to celebrate the southern migration of the Bogong moths. This time-honored gathering brought local mobs together to feast and exchange stories. Inspired by the Bogong moths’ life cycle, the gardens of the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) are thoughtfully designed to reflect this profound connection to Country, nature and tradition.
